Bob Marley Museum

Museum installation for Bob's 80th birthday with a new performance of a classic song

Glassworks and AI artist, Jim Derks, were approached to support an idea for a museum experience for Bob Marley's 80th birthday celebration. The installation called for a hologram-style projection of Bob singing "Would You Be Loved" to be placed inside of the Tuff Gong recording booth. Leveraging insights from the Sevdaliza deepfake project, we enthusiastically accepted the challenge.

The methodology we proposed combined AI-supported deepfake with traditional compositing techniques. The base footage would feature one of Bob's living family members singing the featured track to serve as the hero performance that would remain true to the reggae legend.

Our biggest challenge was blending the face output with the source footage in a natural and recognisable way. Glassworks CD, Duncan Malcolm, along with Ant Laranjo, blended traditional techniques using Flame and Nuke tools to merge iterations of Bob's digital performance and bring back elements such as beard, eyes, and hair from the modern day Marley.

Although our work was featured in the teaser for the event, the content was not presented to the public. It was a great experience and a great use case for blending technologies with traditional filmmaking technique - particularly with the support and trust of the Marley Family.
