IBM 360 Films

360 film production with integrated motion graphics showcasing IBM Watson real world integration

This was a Mill+ project directed by Tom Basis. It was a wild ride, filmed across multiple challenging locations in Australia with a very quick turnaround for full 360 content that could be presented in VR and viewed on Youtube's interactive player. There were four separate films focusing on the different ways IBM's Watson is utilised in high stakes environments. The idea involved filming live action content that would be accomponied by dynamic motion graphics illustrating the details outlined in the voiceover, which came from Watson itself.

I happened to be on holiday in Cape Town when the call came in from a colleague back in New York. A team was being rapidly assembled for the project and I happened to be an EP who was already in the southern hemisphere. Would I be up for coming onboard and exchanging my return flight for a one way flight to Perth? Of course! The director and small crew joined me there and we continued to the far northwest of Australia to film on a working oil and gas plant in Karatha. Then we traversed eastward to Brisbane, where we shot on a live runway, and finally to the Gold Coast to film at the top of the highest skyscraper in eastern Australia.

Due to the quick turnaround, it was imperative that we lock in our hero takes on the day in order to upload the material for the VFX and design team to begin work right away. This meant previewing the footage with VR headsets on location and then having approval sessions with agency and client that evening back at the hotel. They were all single takes, which helped our cause, but it required trust and imagination to envision the placement of the supplemental infographics and verify that any clean up or stabilising would be achievable. We successfully delivered on all fronts, even in the face of an extremely difficult deadline while pushing the boundaries of 360 content with VFX and seamlessly integrated design elements.
