Michelin Times Square

Times Square billboards featuring cinemagraphs and realtime weather display

The famous Michelin Man has been a gently symbol of safety for decades and was utilised as a standout element within the chaos of Times Square. The Mill was approached to develop the visuals and realtime tech used to drive a series of cinemagraphs and graphics to provide live weather reports for locations across the United States.

We were provided with references of a decal wrap for a school bus and needed to build a 3D bus that could be positioned and lit for each of the weather scenarios. Hi rez digital matte paintings were created and subtle weather and lighting animations were applied to each of the potential conditions, such as sun, rain, part cloudy, and snow. The output was pre-rendered as video elements as well as stills for OOH billboard usage.

Weather data was pulled in realtime by called the Dark Sky api for a pre-determined list of locations. This was then used to call the current time and weather to be presented with dynamic 2D graphics and placed across multiple screens in prime the Marriott Marquee location in Times Square.
